Writing Making a Life, Making a Living
By Mark Albion
But it would take me 22 more years to learn the third lesson that I would need to write this book.
When indeed shall we learn that we are all related one to the other, that we are all members of one body? — Helen Keller
In June of 1996, I traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, ostensibly to deliver a speech at the United Nations' last world conference of the Millennium. When I looked out at the delegates, I saw black—many black faces. Faces that looked different than mine. Faces of Black Africa.
I spent ten days with these people. We talked, we listened, we laughed... together. And I learned that one thing: We are all the same. We are one.
That understanding shifted my consciousness—my paradigm of the world. It help me move from an either/or philosophy to an AND philosophy.
It was the birth of my knowing that indeed we all can make a life and make a living. That everything —all that we do and all that we are—is inextricably tied up into one. That is, do the writing and the living will come to you in its own way.
Here's hoping I was right!
Ultimately, it's not about the money we make, it's about the journey we take. — Charles Wang
